Career North takes a different approach to recruiting than those typically used by executive search firms, head hunters and employment agencies. Most of those firms do a good job of recruiting individuals with the required educational background and job experience. However, in addition to providing candidates with the required skill sets, we also identify individuals who will fit well into the culture of the clients organization. Stories appear almost weekly in the business press about highly paid executives who have been fired after having been recruited by prestigious and expensive executive search firms. What went wrong? In most cases it was because the executive's on-the-job behavior and management style were out of sync with the culture of the hiring organization. The extra steps we take help minimize the chances of a poor cultural fit. Working as a corporate insider and serving as the Chair and President of several boards have given me a unique view of the importance of a proper cultural fit. Our methods include several on-site visits to the hiring organization and in-depth and scripted interviews with both executive management and rank and file employees. We also advocate the formation of three to five member internal search committees Hiring managers are brought into the recruitment process at an early stage, receive training in effective and legal interviewing questions and techniques and play a key role in establishing hiring criteria. Career North takes care of the administrative aspects of the job search including appropriate employment advertising, networking and related search techniques. We also do the initial screening to compile a short list of potential candidates. Carefully scripted telephone interviews are used to verify resume information and to probe for a good cultural fit. In conjunction with the Search Committee, in person interviews are conducted utilizing scripted questions and customized candidate rating and ranking forms. Career North assists the hiring organization in the development of a cost effective and competitive salary and benefit package. We conduct an in-depth background check and recommend orientation and training programs for the new hire. We also track the progress of the new hire through the initial employment stage and provide executive counseling as appropriate.
